PTA OPERATION HELPING HANDS (OHH) OPERATION KEEP WARM
The month of October, please send in gently used coats, hats, scarves, mittens, & gloves to be placed in our OHH bins outside the media center. These warm winter items will be donated to North Fulton Community Charities. This is a great time to clean out your kids outgrown winter gear from past years and pass them on to children in need. http://nfcchelp.org/
Box Tops & Labels for Education
Don’t forget to send in your Box Tops and Labels for Education each week! The PTA is doing a contest each month to see which class and student has the best participation! We want to win : )
Remind: In order to keep everyone updated and in attempt to reach the parents quickly, we are going to use Remind. It is an app/web based program that allows us to message you with reminders. Things like "Field trip tomorrow" or "Don't forget to wear green!" or "Social Studies Quiz tomorrow!" We will still make sure things are written in their agenda but this allows Ms. Moore and Miss Wilson to get a hold of parents quickly. Please use this link to join: www.remind.com/join/e6a67g
Reading
We have been working on predicting, envisioning, and retelling while reading a story. We finished reading The Absent Author aloud in class and have started The Diamond Mystery. I think the kids are REALLY enjoying reading mystery books and trying to solve problems. We will be doing a mystery celebration by teaching a second grade class about all we have learned. I will post a signup genius asking for some snacks for a celebration. Be on the lookout for that next week! Remember that one of the best ways to help your kiddo become a better reading is by having them read every night. Some students haven't been filling out their reading log which tells us they haven't been reading. Please make sure you have your kiddo read about 20 minutes a night.
Writing
Our informational writing unit is going so well. We have experts on many different subjects! We have been working on our organization and table of contents. This week we talked about introductions and the chapters in our books. The kids have also been adding details and facts to their writing. We can't wait to share our informational books when we are finished right before Thanksgiving!! :) Be on the lookout for snack signups!
Science/Social Studies
We have wrapped up our science unit on rocks and minerals. We will be moving on to economics for a few weeks. After thanksgiving we will dive into our first PBL on pollution. This will be an exciting time. Please make sure you are sending those plastic tops and coke cans so that they can make some recycled projects in art!

Math
This unit is much more involved and harder than the previous unit. Please know that the homework we send for math is a great way to see what we are learning in class. This week we worked on the data standards. We talked about bar graphs and pictographs. Most of this was review from 2nd grade. Their test for this unit is tentatively scheduled for November 4th, which means we will spend most of next week reviewing for their test.
Also please know that practice at home is another way to help your kiddo become successful with their math facts. We had our another timed test this week. We have noticed that many kids aren't studying their facts! We really need the kids to be studying those facts. The more successful they are with their fluency, the easier the rest of the year will be. Everything builds off of this unit. We will be giving the kiddos plenty of tools and strategies to help make them successful but please know that we need your help as well.
