LEGOLAND Field Trip--What are we doing?
You probably might be thinking what could we do at LEGOLAND that is educational or aligns with what we study in third grade. Believe it or not, a lot! The workshop that we are doing is called "Spin the Gears" which builds on students’ knowledge of how to apply science, math, and engineering to tasks. In the workshop, students will build a series of models and experiments with gears exploring the difference between drive vs. driven gears, clockwise vs. counterclockwise, and discovering the concepts of effort and force. While these may not be concepts that align with any of our science content standards, they do align with our science "Habits of Mind" and "Nature of Science" standards. These standards are based on the scientific process and inquiry-based learning, modeling, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities, and communicating outcomes clearly.
We have spoken to several other schools whose third graders have also done this workshop, and they have raved about how wonderful it is! We are VERY excited about being able to have this opportunity for our students to have a hands-on, interactive STEM project as a fun way to end our year of hard work and learning!
We’re planning for the Book Fair, and would like to budget for students who can’t afford to buy books. We will be holding a grade level competition to generate money to fund books for these students. Each day of our Preview and Buying Days, we will have containers labeled by grade in the Media center. Students (and staff!) may drop their donations in the container marked with their grade level. The grade level with the most money donated will win a Pajama Day. We will be counting the money daily, so we’ll provide a daily dollar statistic for the students.
Be on the lookout for emails about supplies as the school year wraps up. We have STEM week coming up and we will be doing some awesome experiments that we will need supplies for! I will send out more information next week.
We will be reviewing and continuing enrichment activities in all subjects over the next few weeks as we begin to wrap up the school year!
