A friendly reminder that money is due to our CAT moms by September 8th. Remember, they are asking for a one time donation of $20.00. This will cover so many different kinds of supplies and class parties throughout the year.
ATTENTION: We need each kid to bring in their own pair of earbuds or headphones (some that they can keep here). These will be used for many uses. Everything from standardized testing to just listening to a video when they are researching for class.
Thank you to all the parents who came to curriculum night last night! It was great to see everyone again. If you were unable to attend, the packets will be sent home with those kiddos in next Thursday's papers! Be on the look out. I also attached the list of emergency snacks. If you would like to sign up, please email me and I will fill it in. We also attached our wish list that was out last night. Again, every little thing helps at the beginning of a new year!
Homework Packet information: Today we sent home the first homework packet! There was a letter attached to the front of it. In a short summary: we will send home packets every Friday and they are due back the next Thursday. This allows for time at home to work on reading and language arts homework. Everyone has crazy schedules, so this will help with time management. They came home today with their grammar notebooks to help with their homework over the next week! I also reminded them that we are going to work more in depth with those skills next week!!
Phonics: A letter was also sent home today about our phonics studies. Again in short, we will give them new words on Friday and have a quiz the following Friday (or Thursday in this case due to no school on Friday). But throughout the week, we will work on the rules behind the skill of the week. We will teach strategies to help with these words. Think of it more as teaching phonics skills than just a test where you memorize words. The skill will be listed at the top of each new set of words. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns after looking over the letter on green paper that came home today. This is just one small piece of the big puzzle to make sure these kids are ready for 4th grade :)
Agenda: I am attaching a picture of what their agenda should look like going into next week. We showed them exactly where to write every thing they will need. We also showed them where to right their nightly reading minutes!
Important Dates:
September 1st- Teacher Workday- No School
September 4th-Labor Day, No School
Box Tops & Labels for Education
Don’t forget to send in your Box Tops and Labels for Education each week! The PTA is doing a contest each month to see which class and student has the best participation! We want to win : )
Visitor Sign-in & Badges
Anyone who wants to volunteer at the school MUST complete the online volunteer registration. It takes 48 hours to process, and the office will NOT let you come into a classroom if you have not completed this. Click HERE to be taken to the online course. Please know you must do this at the beginning of every school year.
Reading:
We started talking about how long we read here at school and at home. Next week they will be expected to read at least 15-20 minutes 3 times next week. We showed them where you need to initial in their agenda that they read. Next week we will dive into reading partnerships and finding that just right book!
Writing:
This past week we focused on writing our personal narratives with a storyteller voice instead of a reporter voice. We want our writing to be exciting for our readers which is why we want to use a storyteller voice. Next week we will focus on revising and also adding paragraphs, dialogue, and elaboration.
Math:
This week we really discussed place value and rounding. We worked on rounding to tens and hundreds. We also started reviewing addition and subtraction. Any practice you can provide at home will help them grow stronger with the content. Fluency is such an important part of 3rd grade. We will be continuing to look at addition and subtraction next week.
Science:
Our first science unit will be on Georgia's habitats. The kiddos have been studying the regions and will be continuing that research next week. Then they will present the region they were assigned to the class. The best way to know if you really know something is to teach it! That will be them next week :)
Have a great weekend!! :)
